Messi awarded Onze d'Or as the best player in Europe

Lionel Messi has been named the best player of the season by Onze Mondial, winning the Onze d'Or for the fourth timein his career.

He follows Cristiano Ronaldo, who won it last season, only being awarded it twice in his career.

With four Onze d'Or awards to his name, Messi surpasses both Zinedine Zidane and Michel Platini to become the player with the most Onze d'Or awards.
The Onze d'Or is an award given by French magazine Onze Mondial since 1976. The award honours the best football player in Europe, with anyone playing in a European league eligible. Since 1991, there has also been a vote for the best coach of the year. This year the award is going to Zidane Zidane, who has also won it last year.


Messi has recently told the Paper Magazine that he doesn't think of himself as the best player: "I don't consider myself the best, I think I am just another player.On the field, we are all the same when the game begins."
